DO YOU KNOW WHAT GOLDSTAR DOES?Gold Star Animals Helping People, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation licensed in the state of New Mexico. The mission of Goldstar Animals Helping People is to improve the quality of life for the residents of northern New Mexico through a therapeutic program which includes services and activities promoting human/animal interaction. Goldstar Animals Helping People Dog Visitation and Therapy programs. Handlers take their Delta Society registered dogs to nursing homes, schools, the library, hospice settings, family and children counseling, and court interviews with children (www.Deltasociety.org). This program is planning to extend soon to include the Holy Cross Hospital. We currently have 7 Delta Pet Partner teams, including Shiloh and Sandra Miller (photo above), and several other therapy dog teams in training. Goldstar Search and Rescue has been registered with the State of New Mexico since January 2004 and is called on by the State Police to help find lost, ill or injured people in wilderness areas of Northern New Mexico through the use of our search and rescue trained dogs and horses.
All of us at Goldstar dearly love animals, and while we applaud the efforts of all of the terrific animal rescue organizations, our mission is different. At Goldstar the focus is on the power of healing that animals can bring to people who are in difficult circumstances. We help train healthy pets with good dispositions so
that they may brighten the life of someone in a nursing home, cheer up a troubled teenager, or listen to a child who is having tough time learning to read aloud. Some of the therapy animals animals were at one time rescued, others may be purebreds, but the goal is always the same -- bringing comfort and help to humans in need. Please join us in whatever way you can to help make this healing a reality in our community.
I have been working with Goldstar, a certified New Mexico State Police, Search and Rescue team for several years. I have watched as their numbers grew and their training became more intense. Tim Johnson, Jr., New Mexico Police Search and Rescue Field Coordinator |
